It's been quite a busy year so far, but what a way to kick off 2012!

The opening of 11 x 17 in Portland, Oregon went exactly how I had hoped. Many close friends and collaborators in one room celebrating not only 7 years of poster making but their own music, talents and relationships. The show was a homecoming of sorts, since 2005 I've spent countless hours designing and illustrating show posters in the great city of Portland, showcasing many old acts and new. Since moving to Seattle nearly 9 months ago, it only made sense to bring the work back where it originated.

During the show, someone asked for my advice: How does one begin creating posters for bands/venues? I first responded that you must be okay with doing nearly all of it for free in the beginning, yet with 46 of my posters up on the walls it suddenly occurred to me what was so much more important. I restated my previous advice and told him that throughout the last 7 years I made sure that each one my posters were created with the same quality, the same caliber, energy, thought, meticulousness and attention no matter if I was being paid or not. This idea seemed to sum up the show for me, many years of hard work with many, many more to come.

I want to thank everyone who came to the show, bought a poster, bought one of the Keys Open Doors books or prints, Kyle for playing such an amazing set of songs, Erik for hosting, friends and support. I love you all.

Howdy everyone, quick but overdue update: New poster coming soon along with artwork for local Portland, Oregon band Pocketknife's new EP release, some pin designs and a new revamped logo for Schmidt's Beauty products.

Sketching is underway for Typhoon's next full length release. I won't disclose too much about the look of the new record but I'm super excited about it. It's definitely going to be much different from anything I've done before and I'm looking forward to the process and its completion.

Also, I just recently moved to Seattle, Washington. I officially arrived last Thursday with a new day job, a new house and a much bigger city. It's been a fairly easy transition from Portland as I got a job unexpectedly quick and am living with some great friends. Looking forward to seeing what the city has to offer. Bad Blood Reading Series

Here is a logo and flier made for the Bad Blood Reading Series lead by Drew Swenhaugen, Zach Schomburg and Joseph Mains. The series takes traveling writers and poets and gives them a place to read while stopping through Portland.

Logo lettering and bottom symbol were inspired and recreated from an old beer label. All the letters were done by hand using Illustrator.

Happenings

Keys Open Doors opens in less than a month and preparations are underway. I'm currently taking care of the logistical parts of the show including the poster, displays and how I will exhibit the pieces. As of now, all the pieces will be displayed frame free using a system that I think will look extremely clean and modern. I'll leave out the details until the show.

The original screen prints to be sold at the show are very limited at the moment. Looks like 8 out of the 20 keys will have prints available, but more could be on the way if time permits. The prints that are available look amazing and are definitely worth the money. Thanks to Tyler and Andrew for the help.

The books, the books, the books. It's the whole reason I started this series. So the books have all the keys in them, all twenty, signed, numbered, french flaps, linen paper, and highly detailed printing. These will be on sale at the show too, come get one.

The official date for the Portland exhibition of Keys Open Doors is Thursday, April 7Th. The event will be hosted by Devin Gallagher from Typhoon at his High Scores and Records headquarters Tracey Gallery.

Preparations are underway including a set of limited edition screen prints of the 20 keys. The prints will be approximately 8.5" x 11" on heavy, white vellum Bristol in black ink. These will be a limited run of 5 prints per key, signed and numbered.

Tracey Gallery is located in downtown Portland in the Everett Street Lofts at 625 NW Everett. The gallery is situated on 6th avenue between Everett and Flanders.

I hope to see you all there and celebrate the completion of this series and exhibition. The book will be available for purchase as well as the limited edition prints.

Here's a new one for Holocene. Headliner Andy Combs and the Moth was the inspiration for the poster. One of the things I love about doing posters is the amount of ideas you can get just by the band's name.

New Poor Claudia Chapbooks

New Poor Claudia chapbooks are finished and ready for AWP in D.C. The first is a double chapbook including Digital Macrame by Paige Taggart and On Happier Lawns by Justin Marks. These two chapbooks were bound together in a special Z style cover, read one chapbook and flip it over to read the other. Turned out pretty beautifully. See the Poor Claudia page for details of the illustrated cover pages.

The second chapbook released is Heroisms by Dan Beachy-Quick. After many versions of the design we settled on bold, powerful lettering with a silhouette of a hammer running through the top portion of the title. Again, check out the cover of this chapbook on the Poor Claudia page.

Construction/Destruction

So the first two illustrations for Construction/Destruction are nearly complete. The second below will be redone just slightly larger. Both were done on 500lb vellum bristol with pen and ink.

So, drawing is underway for the series Construction/Destruction. It took awhile to work through the logistics of each piece such as size, medium and how to tackle creating such large illustrations.

The ten, 24"x36" illustrations will display objects and objects of objects either dispersing or collecting. Does that make sense? I'm still finding the words to describe this series accurately. So, my original idea came when designing the cover of Poor Claudia No.2. The cover shows an above view of a city, towards the middle of the cover you see the pieces of this city begin to disperse and separate until you reach the bottom of the cover where only a few pieces remain.

I found the subject interesting. I felt that it was a snapshot of some middle stage of shifting. It was intriguing to my eye to be able to see this shift both ways. Was it a city dispersing into nameless shapes or was it collecting to form the mass?

As I was brainstorming and mapping things out, the series began taking on elements of illusion in a way. The pieces are meant to give the viewer a choice, to think while also taking in highly detailed and great illustration. I feel that M.C. Escher is a master of such detail and illusion. His work, being one of my favorite artists, is a great inspiration.

I look forward to the upcoming months as pieces will be completed. I will be posting frequently as the series takes shape. Can't wait to show them to everyone and get your thoughts.

New Poster for Monarques, Arch Cape and Yours at Holocene Thursday, January 13th at 8:30. The Monarques have a very distinct 50's style sound that I enjoyed very much when I saw them awhile back. This being the reason that I chose a beehive hairstyle. Originally the face was in there, but thought it looked best without it.

Keys Open Doors Opening Reception

The artist reception for Keys Open Doors was a huge success. Around 80 people attended and kept the room filled the whole night. It was incredible to see so many new faces and to receive such a good response. Everyone was gracious with their words and extremely supportive of the art.

I'm very pleased to announce that about 30 books sold as well as 6 framed prints. Thanks to Nolan from www.straightcrushing.wordpress.com for heading up the event (he was the handsome guy handling all the money). Thanks also to Nik, Jerad and John at Catalyst for all of their support and help. Jerad even ironed a sheet for me one day, John gave me a key for the gallery and Nik gave me big hugs throughout the night.

This Thursday the 9th will be the second 'soft' opening for Keys Open Doors right in time for the Capitol Hill Artwalk. So, if you didn't get a chance to come and see the artwork, buy a book or print then this is one more chance. All books and framed prints will be on sale. Also, only this Thursday, there will be hand signed and numbered prints available for purchase.

Hello everyone,

A quick update about the upcoming release of Keys Open Doors. Things are finally taking shape and the next two months I will be busy getting things together and in order. The book will begin the printing stage early November and will be completed by the 15th. There's still much work to be done for instance getting prints made for the displays and working out the show details. Nolan from Straight Crushing (www.straightcrushing.wordpress.com) and I will be doing much of the planning in November including the first round of poster/flier distribution and pasting some huge ads on the neighboring wall of the Stranger. Let's hope for a big turn-out.

Well, the skeleton key series is coming to close as I'm finishing up the last three illustrations to make a total of twenty. Now comes the exciting part and the reason for the update:

The keys will soon be compiled and published in the 1st of a bi-annual publication called 'Collected Works' which will showcase a different series of my artwork. The first being 'Keys Open Doors'. The books will include all twenty keys in an 8.5"x5.5" pamphlet style book with heavy stock, perforated pages (for easy tear out to use at your discretion) with french flap covers. These will be printed as a limited run of 100 copies.

To release the book there will be two shows. The first will be at Seattle's Catalyst Gallery (www.catalystgallery.com) and headed up by my good friend Nolan Foster of StraightCrushing (www.straightcrushing.wordpress.com) on December 3rd 2010. The second will be in Portland sometime in January at a space not yet decided. Be on the look-out for more news on this in the near future.

Both shows will be centered around the release of 'Keys Open Doors' with the keys from the book on display. There will also be a sneak preview of the next 'Collected Works' entitled '11x17' which will showcase twenty posters. Fifteen of these posters will also be on display during this event.

It has taken quite some time to complete this series from when it started way back during issue 2 of Poor Claudia. I'm so happy not only for its completion, but for the amount of support I've received through the process of designing and illustrating them. Thanks to all who had a hand in suggestions, support and feedback. I hope to see all of you at the opening in December!
